Do Good Stories
Building Confidence In The Kitchen
Through programming at Completely Kids, youth are introduced to introductory culinary skills and prepare snacks together to build upon their capacity for long-term self-sufficiency. So far, students have prepared sweet potato fries, oat banana pancakes and veggie burgers. Lessons have given youth the opportunity to practice chopping and peeling vegetables and using household appliances for the first time. Learning outcomes also include improved awareness in nutrition and the growing process of common local vegetables. When asked what he liked best about the program, one youth answered he likes the way cooking food for himself makes him feel!
Inspiring Students to Become Leaders
This April, Roncalli Catholic High School students visited the Food Hub to spend their Junior Retreat day volunteering with No More Empty Pots. The 12 volunteers kicked off their day by learning about the mission of No More Empty Pots while discussing their interest in pursuing a career within the local food system or starting their own entrepreneurial business. After touring the Food Hub, students broke into small groups to assist in packing produce boxes and meals, prepping garden beds and cleaning the loading dock. Students ended their retreat by picking up litter in the Florence neighborhood and enjoying an ice cream treat from Zesto’s. One student said, “I love how open and helpful No More Empty Pots is to the community. I’m inspired to do more to help in my own community!”
Connecting
Art, Food & Culture
No More Empty Pots offers food programming to the Art Club and Action Brigade student groups at The Union for Contemporary Arts to demonstrate cooking as an expression of culture and art. Art Club is an arts and cultural enrichment program for youth, ages 7-10 years, and Action Brigade is a socially-engaged art program that arms youth, ages 11-14 years, with tools and strategies related to topics that impact people locally and globally. “No More Empty Pots meets students wherever they are at,” said Decker Gabriel-Woods, No More Empty Pots Community Education Assistant. “I help give them the skills and tools to express themselves, build community and create improved self-sufficiency.”
