position description

NMEP seeks a versatile and flexible individual with a thirst for learning capable of supporting one or more program teams with direct services and program delivery. The teams needing support at this level include Cups Cafes, which operates cafes at two locations; Food Distribution Team, which produces and manages all food products for the organization; and Community Education, which provides a variety of community-based educational programming. Each program has specific needs and qualifications. An applicant does not need to have all the qualifications listed to apply, but the more qualified an applicant is, the more hours they will be able to work. These responsibilities are also suitable for long-term volunteers or interns. All NMEP personnel are expected to prioritize people and a focus on relationships while maintaining high standards of program delivery
and using sustainable budgeting and time management practices. This position will report to a specific team lead or to the COO, depending on their primary responsibilities.

cafe staffing

● Exemplify radical, engaged hospitality
● Perform all general duties of a barista: open, mid-shift, and close shift
● Have a passion and intuition for serving in a cafe/food environment
● Show confidence and effectiveness in operating the POS (Square)
● End of day deposits and cash handling procedures
● Comply with all Cups Cafe and NMEP policies including inventory, cleaning, and programming
● Following company policy to support the organizational Key Performance Indicators
● Serve as an attending staff member at Community Education events or programming including birthday parties

COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM ASSISTANCE

Provide classroom management support including redirecting learners and delivering accessibility-oriented adaptations to programming
● Support instructional staff in preparing program materials, delivering sessions, and resetting the instruction space
● Support program staff in ensuring documentation and feedback is collected including taking attendance and administering surveys or other evaluative activities
● Support the team in handling administrative issues such as scheduling programming, communicating with customers, and reporting on team activities through storytelling and data
● Support the team in inventorying and managing program materials and supplies including keeping supplies organized and ensuring that requisitions are handled expediently
● Serve as an attending staff member at Community Education events or programming including birthday parties
● Support Community Education-run initiatives such as the waste management initiative

kitchen assistance

●  Assist with preparing and producing food menu items for No More Empty Pots programs and events following established recipes
● Assist with recipe testing of NMEP menus
● Maintains sanitary food handling methods and procedures and maintain safety and sanitation in compliance with all relevant regulations and NMEP policies
● Support weekly inventorying procedures ensuring appropriate handling, storage, and utilization
● Utilize NMEP kitchen equipment and facilities in a safe and clean manner
● Consistently provide high quality food products by adhering to recipe and presentation standards
● Support the entire catering cycle including booking, planning, ordering, food production, delivery, and staffing events
● Support communication with internal and external customers to ensure catering and events expectations are appropriately set and met

community harvest meals program assistance

● Support sourcing of local and gleaned produce for the whole produce CSA option for Community Harvest customers
● Support communication with culinary staff who produce meals to accurately communicate healthy prepared meals product to customers and integrate customer feedback to improve product offerings
● Support collection of data on the Meals program
● Develop educational nutrition and budgeting content  or a weekly customer insert to improve customers’ educational and self-sufficiency outcomes
● Assist with budget-conscious, nutrition-oriented cooking education programming for customers in the Community Harvest program to improve customers’ education and self-sufficiency outcomes
● Support customer relationship management for the Community Harvest program including outreach, registration, invoicing, taking payments, responding to product feedback from customers, and managing exits to ensure quality customer experience
● Handle payments including operating an EBT machine and appropriately managing other tender in compliance with organizational policy
● Support distribution of product for the Community Harvest program including pick-up times and delivery to community-based locations to reduce access barriers for customers
● Support communication with community-based partners to support program goals such as recruitment and distribution

qualifications

● Experience in food/beverage or hospitality industry
● Experience and skill to effectively follow End of Day Deposits & cash handling procedures
● Be available to work 20+ hours on-shift as a barista: including bar-backing, register, and bar
● Available to work high-volume days including weekends and holidays
● Ability and resources to consistently arrive at work on time

Preferred Skills, Qualities, and Experience

● Social media content development skills and experience
● Experience and skill to adjust Square POS system
● Conversational Spanish fluency

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

● Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a table or desk for up to 6 hours at a time
● May work in an indoor or outdoor environment
● A valid driver’s license, access to transportation, and local travel are required
● Prefer ability to operate medium-sized machinery including getting on and off a refrigerated truck lift
● Constantly moves about event spaces at various locations for up to 8 hours at a time
● Frequently moves product weighing up to 50 pounds between rooms in the Food Hub or from one location to another
● Frequently positions self to reach products stored on high or low storage shelves
● Frequently works in indoor conditions
● This person may constantly serve as the barista in the cafes and must be able to remain in a stationary position behind a counter for up to 8 hours at a time
● Must be able to discern between acceptable and unacceptable product and cleanliness standards in a food service setting

status

Part-time, hourly

salary

Level I applicants will be hired on at $12-15/hour; Level II applicants will be hired on at $13-17/hour. Levels will be determined according to qualifications, experience, and scope of responsibilities.
