The Hunger Banquet aims to display the reality of food insecurity.
WoodmenLife Chapter 16 and Mercy High School will be hosting a Hunger Banquet in collaboration with No More Empty Pots. Former KETV News Anchor, Carol Kloss McClellan, will be the mistress of ceremonies for the event.
Chef Betty Deepe with No More Empty Pots will prepare three different menus based on three income levels and hunger statistics for the Omaha area. Every guest will get a delicious meal, but will draw lots to determine which meal they’re served. Mercy High School students will create personas and write backgrounds for them on color-coded tickets that are given to event attendees as they arrive. Each diner will draw one of those stories and assume that persona for the evening, during dinner and discussions at the table.
The Hunger Banquet serves 100 people who are assigned seats based on random draw of a ticket. Different incomes get radically different meals.
This program is meant to personalize hunger and makes participants aware that there is no single “face” of hunger – it can affect people of all ages and conditions.
There is no cost to attend. Free-will donations will be collected at the door to benefit Table Grace Cafe. If you are unable to attend, but would still like to donate, checks can be made payable directly to Table Grace Cafe and mailed to WoodmanLife.
