This month, we celebrate the graduates of the 10th cohort of the Culinary Certificate Program. Nematullah, Hanan, Tamara and Jawaher were the first group of students to engage in a hybrid of in-class instruction, virtual instruction and self-paced learning. During the eight weeks of the program, the students learned essential culinary skills then applied them while working side by side with volunteers and staff to execute meal production and packaging for the Community Harvest and Feeding Our Neighbors programs. We can’t wait to see what they do next on their culinary journeys!

The Feeding Our Neighbors program was designed as an emergency response to urgent food insecurity. We know that food insecurity affects our neighbors within city boundaries and in rural communities. This month, NMEP collaborated with colleagues at WellCare Healthy Blue, Nebraska Impact, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency and NORM WAITT SR YMCA to provide 500 locally sourced and curated food boxes including fresh spinach, sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots squash, garlic, onions, rosemary, a whole chicken and a cookbook. With focus and intention to support our neighbors in South Sioux City, No volunteers and staff worked diligently to procure, pack and ultimately deliver the eight pallets of food to our neighbors in South Sioux City.
In true 2020 fashion, plans changed and a pivot ensued to ensure the delivery.
It takes a community to support a community. In 2020, you supported serving neighbors in 47 zip codes in Nebraska and Iowa with over 50,000 meals and 80,000 pounds of fresh local produce. Your everlasting care for people is amazing. Because of you, each person receiving meals and fresh produce has felt the care of a community. And in your caring, you have also economically supported local farmers and producers in our local foodshed.
This pandemic will have a lasting effect in our communities, for us and our neighbors. There has been tremendous loss, grief and pain in 2020. But there have also been moments of indescribable joy and gratitude. Your care and contributions in every way that you can imagine has meant the world to each of us.
Thank you for showing up and modeling what it means to be a community of people who care about our neighbors!
